Save passwords in appealing UI. Overall: I use KeePassXC to manage my passwords (personal and business). Pros: With KeePassXC I see the same advantages as with KeePass: passwords are stored securely and locally on my hard drive. In addition, the software is open source. The UI integrates very well into Windows 10/ 11.

I have been using Keepass for years and found it to be excellent and reliable. Now with KeepassXC, it is even better and actively developed. The browser integration is also a must-have feature.

KeePassXC gives you complete control over your passwords by storing everything in a secure local file instead of on a remote server, and its autofill function is useful – but the interface is tricky and KeePassXC misses features elsewhere.

Detailed Review

KeePassXC is a robust, open-source password manager that provides a secure and offline solution for managing your passwords and sensitive information on macOS, Windows, and Linux. As a community fork of KeePassX, it aims to extend and improve upon the original KeePass Password Safe, offering a modern and feature-rich experience while maintaining its free and open-source nature. KeePassXC is particularly favored by users who prioritize security, transparency, and control over their data, as it stores password databases locally and employs strong encryption algorithms.

Standout Features

  • Secure Offline Storage: Encrypts and stores passwords in a local database file, giving users full control over their data and eliminating cloud-based vulnerabilities.
  • Cross-Platform Compatibility: Works seamlessly on macOS, Windows, and Linux, ensuring a consistent experience across different operating systems.
  • Strong Encryption: Utilizes AES, Twofish, and ChaCha20 encryption to protect password databases.
  • Auto-Type: Allows for automatic filling of login credentials into applications and websites, enhancing convenience without compromising security.
  • Browser Integration: Offers browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and other browsers, enabling direct auto-fill and password management within web browsers.
  • Password Generator: Includes a customizable password generator to create strong and unique passwords.
  • Import/Export: Supports importing from various password managers (like LastPass, Dashlane) and exporting to CSV and other formats.
  • Security Features: Offers protection against screenshots and recordings by default, and supports YubiKey challenge-response for enhanced security.

Conclusion

KeePassXC is an excellent password manager for Mac users who value security, privacy, and open-source software. Its offline storage and strong encryption provide a high level of security, while features like auto-type and browser integration enhance usability. While its interface may not be as polished as some commercial password managers, and it may require a bit more technical setup for certain features, KeePassXC delivers a powerful and reliable password management solution for free. It is particularly well-suited for tech-savvy users and those who prefer to keep their sensitive data under their direct control, without relying on cloud services.
