BitWarden seems a bit more useful than iCloud Keychain as it does allow some degree of categorization.

Beside the fact that Bitwarden is completely open source and validated by security companies, it has a ton of functionality that really improves security at home and within an organization.

I have it installed on my iPhone and use it exclusively. I've never had an issue and works great. Has FaceID integration which makes getting password easy after master password has been used to access the DB.

Detailed Review

Bitwarden is a robust, open-source password manager available for macOS, designed to securely manage and store sensitive information across various devices. It employs strong end-to-end AES-256 bit encryption, salted hashing, and PBKDF2 SHA-256 to protect user data, ensuring that only the user can access their encrypted vault. Bitwarden is praised for its commitment to open-source principles, allowing for community scrutiny and contribution to its security. It offers a wide range of features including unlimited password storage, secure notes, credit card and identity storage, and cross-platform syncing.

Standout Features

  • Open Source and Free: Bitwarden's core functionality is free and open source, making it accessible and transparent.
  • Cross-Platform Compatibility: Available as desktop applications (macOS, Windows, Linux), browser extensions (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, etc.), and mobile apps (iOS, Android).
  • Unlimited Storage: Even the free plan offers unlimited password storage across unlimited devices.
  • Secure Password Generator: Built-in tool to create strong, unique passwords.
  • Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Supports various 2FA methods, including authenticator apps, email, and hardware keys (premium).
  • Bitwarden Send: Securely share encrypted text and files with others.

Conclusion

Bitwarden is an excellent password management solution for Mac users, particularly those who prioritize security, transparency, and cost-effectiveness. Its free plan is remarkably generous, offering core password management features without limitations on devices or password count. While its user interface might be considered basic by some, it is functional and easy to use. The availability of premium features at a low cost, such as advanced 2FA and file storage, makes Bitwarden a strong contender against paid alternatives. For users seeking a reliable, secure, and open-source password manager for their Mac, Bitwarden is highly recommended.
