Hey guys,. why are you fiddling around with an overhyped toy app while we have such beautyfull things like MacPass?! MacPass is using the open-source kdb(x) database format, as used on Windows and Linux for many years (decades?). The app itself is also open source...chances are pretty good that your data is secure in MacPass. In any case way better than with a closed-source app like 1Password.

I have been using Macpass for a while but this week, it just stopped accepting my password and I get a message that PASSWORD OR KEY FILE IS WRONG (1038). There is no help button to figure out what is going on.

Excellent clone libre à Keepass pour macOS, bien que la dernière mise à jour remonte à Février 2022...

Detailed Review

MacPass is a native macOS application designed as a free and open-source password manager, compatible with the popular KeePass format. It aims to provide a secure and user-friendly way to manage passwords on macOS, addressing the lack of a dedicated native KeePass client. MacPass stores passwords in an encrypted database, accessible with a master password or key file, utilizing robust encryption algorithms like AES and Twofish. It offers a range of features expected from a password manager, including auto-type for filling credentials in applications and web forms, a password generator to create strong passwords, and support for both KDB and KDBX database formats.

Standout Features

  • KeePass Compatibility: Fully compatible with KeePass (KDB, KDBX) database files, allowing cross-platform usage.
  • Native macOS Experience: Designed to feel and behave like a native macOS application with features like tabs, autosave, undo/redo, drag & drop, and QuickLook previews for attachments.
  • Auto-Type: Automatically fills in usernames and passwords into applications and web browsers.
  • Password Generator: Creates strong, customizable passwords.
  • Open Source and Free: Licensed under GPLv3, ensuring transparency and community contribution.
  • Offline Functionality: Operates locally without cloud dependency, though databases can be synced via cloud services separately.

Conclusion

MacPass is a solid choice for macOS users seeking a free, open-source, and KeePass-compatible password manager. Its native macOS integration and feature set make it a convenient and secure option for managing passwords. While it may not have the frequent updates or extensive feature sets of some commercial password managers, its stability, security, and adherence to open-source principles make it a highly recommended tool, particularly for users already invested in the KeePass ecosystem or those who prefer open-source software. However, users should be aware that the last official release was in 2022, and there is no App Store distribution due to its license.
