It brings a fresh approach to online media consumption, aiming to be a one-stop inbox for all your different content sources... I've been using it full-time for a while now, and I absolutely love it.

The best word to describe the new Reeder is “ambitious.” Its purpose is not just to be your RSS reader, but your inbox for keeping up with feeds of many different kinds from various sources across the Internet.

With this most recent version, the Reeder developer has included tools to view your RSS feeds (Reeder's original purpose), manage feeds, and save articles for reading later using your iCloud storage. As someone who is normally skeptical of all-in-one applications, I like the idea of this update, but I wasn't so sure about whether it would solve my problems. In short, it does.

I've been using Reeder since 2010, and until yesterday. I follow about 150 feeds via Feedbin. Needless to say the new app is useless to me... For anyone looking for a replacement in the same spirit as Reeder I can recommend https://readkit.app.

I use Reeder because it's more stable than most web-based reader. It's mostly native UI, which is snappier than all-web UIs. It's mostly offline unlike many web UIs.

Reeder adds new features like: The new Bionic Reading mode; An in-app Read Later service which syncs with iCloud; Image previews in the articles list (finally); An image viewer; Much improved article viewer; More layout options...

Detailed Review

Reeder is a reimagined content aggregator app for macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, designed to unify your consumption of online information. Moving beyond a traditional RSS reader, Reeder aims to be a central inbox for various content types, including RSS feeds, podcasts, YouTube channels, and social media feeds from platforms like Mastodon and Bluesky. The app emphasizes a seamless, timeline-based reading experience, syncing your reading position across devices and doing away with traditional unread counts.

Standout Features

  • Unified Timeline: Combines RSS feeds, podcasts, videos, and social media into a single, scrollable timeline.
  • Timeline Syncing: Remembers your reading position and syncs it across all your devices via iCloud.
  • Shared Feeds: Allows you to turn any tag into a public, auto-updating feed for easy content sharing.
  • Customizable Filters: Create custom timelines based on keywords, media types, or feed types.
  • Save and Organize Links: Save links from Safari or other apps using the share extension.
  • iCloud Sync: Syncs subscriptions, timeline position, and tagged items across devices using iCloud.

Conclusion

Reeder presents a modern and ambitious approach to content consumption, especially for users managing multiple information streams. Its unified timeline and cross-device syncing are compelling features for staying on top of diverse online content. While the move to a subscription model for full access and the departure from traditional RSS reader paradigms might not suit every user, Reeder offers a polished and feature-rich experience for those seeking a centralized content inbox. Users heavily invested in traditional RSS workflows or those sensitive to subscription costs might consider alternatives like NetNewsWire or Readkit. However, for users embracing a broader content aggregation approach, Reeder provides a compelling and innovative solution.
