Lightshot really makes me miss Greenshot. On the surface it does a similar job but the usability is much worse... One shouldn't have to. I tried to use these features for a while but now I have mostly given up and use it for the one task of selecting an area of the screen to save as an image and then open that saved image in a different image editor to do the markup.

Lightshot helps me do my job easier... Lightshot is a free program that offers a quick and easy way to capture a screen including basic editing tools. It's lightweight and easy to use the software. Since Lightshot is free software, its features compare far more worthy than paid software. Hence there are no big issues with it.

However, I recently bought a MacBook with an Apple Silicon CPU (M1) and Lightshot is kind of sluggish. I also think Rosetta makes it consume more battery. So I am looking for an alternative that is optimized or written for M1 / M2 chips.

Detailed Review

LightShot is a free and lightweight screen capture application available for macOS. It is designed for users who need a simple and quick way to take screenshots and perform basic edits. LightShot replaces the default Print Screen functionality, allowing users to capture either the entire screen or a selected area with just a couple of clicks. Once a screenshot is captured, a small toolbar appears, offering options to save, copy, upload online, or perform quick edits using built-in tools.

Standout Features

  • Fast Screenshot Capture: Capture any part of the screen in two clicks.
  • Built-in Editor: Quickly annotate screenshots with lines, arrows, text, and shapes.
  • Online Sharing: Upload screenshots to prntscr.com and get a shareable short link.
  • Social Media Integration: Directly share screenshots to Twitter and Facebook.
  • Similar Image Search: Search for visually similar images on Google.
  • Easy to Use Interface: Simple and intuitive design for quick operation.

Conclusion

LightShot is a convenient and free tool for Mac users who need basic screenshot functionality. Its ease of use and quick sharing capabilities make it suitable for everyday use and simple annotation tasks. However, users requiring advanced editing features, more robust organizational tools, or those concerned about the security implications of online uploads might find LightShot lacking compared to more feature-rich or offline-focused alternatives. The app's simplicity is both its strength and weakness, making it ideal for quick captures but less powerful for complex screenshot workflows.
