Finder is a very good file explorer... I could hardly say that Finder sucks or is less good than many of the other file explorers.

The best thing I can say about Finder is that it's fine. It does its job and gets out of the way for the most part.

Coloumn view. That was one of the largest time savers for me... I must say that I find it hard to use icon view these days, it feels so inefficient.

Mostly list view. I find the list view similar to the detail view of the window's explorer and that's quite helpful and so I usually stick with that.

I've found the finder to be the best file management built into an OS ever.

Detailed Review

Finder is the cornerstone of the macOS experience, serving as the default file manager and graphical user interface. Described as "The Macintosh Desktop Experience", it is automatically launched upon login and remains active, managing files, folders, applications, disks, and network volumes. Finder allows users to navigate the file system using a desktop metaphor, representing files and folders as icons. It features a browser-like interface with back and forward buttons and supports tabbed browsing for managing multiple folders within a single window. The sidebar provides quick access to frequently used folders and locations.

While Finder provides essential file management capabilities, it is sometimes criticized by power users for lacking advanced features found in third-party file managers. However, for everyday users, Finder offers a balance of simplicity and functionality, seamlessly integrating with macOS features like Spotlight search, Quick Look previews, and file tagging. It supports various view options including Icons, List, Columns, and Gallery to suit different user preferences and file types.

Standout Features

  • File and Folder Management: Basic operations like creating, renaming, moving, copying, deleting files and folders.
  • Application Launching: Easily launch applications stored on the system.
  • Disk and Volume Management: Manage internal and external drives, network volumes, and disk images.
  • Customizable Views: Offers Icon, List, Column, and Gallery views to display files and folders.
  • Quick Look: Preview files without opening them using the space bar.
  • Tags: Organize files with color-coded tags for easy categorization and searching.
  • Sidebar Favorites: Quick access to frequently used folders and locations.
  • Integration with iCloud Drive: Seamlessly access and manage files stored in iCloud.
  • AirDrop Integration: Easily share files wirelessly with nearby Apple devices.

Conclusion

Finder is an indispensable application for every Mac user, providing the fundamental tools for file system navigation and management. Its intuitive interface and seamless integration with macOS make it user-friendly for basic tasks. While it may not offer the advanced features of dedicated file manager alternatives, Finder remains a robust and reliable tool for the majority of users. For users needing more advanced functionalities like dual-pane views, advanced search options, or extensive customization, third-party alternatives like Path Finder, ForkLift or Commander One might be considered. However, for most Mac users, Finder provides a more than adequate and efficient file management experience.
