While Delta's a bit easier to use, Retroarch offers more settings and a much wider variety of systems to emulate... Personally, the big draw for me is support for RetroAchievements...

M1 Macs are now supported via a version called 'RetroArch_Metal'. If you have an M1+ Mac, be sure to use this native version!

Works really well in comparison to all the other emulators I've tried!

On the Mac, I tend to find there's always some problem with each version of RetroArch. Most of the time it's shaders crashing the app, or not working after being applied... For the most part it's fine, but I would just install Windows if you have the space. You get a better RetroArch experience...

We don't have any full-time Apple devs, so there are little quality-of-life bugs that get in the way, and it's difficult for us to help troubleshoot issues since we don't have the hardware on-hand. So, Windows is probably your safer bet, though the Mac port does work.

Detailed Review

RetroArch is a versatile, open-source frontend application that acts as a hub for emulators, game engines, and media players. Available on macOS and other platforms, it is designed to be lightweight, fast, and portable. RetroArch stands out by supporting a vast array of consoles and systems through its modular core system, allowing users to play games from different eras within a single application. It is distributed for Mac via the App Store, Steam, and direct download from the official website.

Standout Features

  • Multi-System Support: Emulates a vast range of consoles and systems by utilizing different "cores" (plugins).
  • Cross-Platform: Available on numerous operating systems, including macOS, Windows, Linux, Android, iOS, and game consoles.
  • Advanced Features: Offers features like shaders, netplay, game rewinding, runahead, and frame-perfect response times for enhanced gameplay.
  • Customizable Interface: Provides a polished, set-top box-oriented menu with support for thumbnails and animated backgrounds.
  • Controller Auto-Configuration: Automatically configures common game controllers when plugged in.
  • RetroAchievements: Supports community-created achievements for retro games, adding a modern challenge to classic titles.

Conclusion

RetroArch is a powerful and comprehensive emulation solution for Mac users who want to play games from various consoles and systems. Its extensive customization options and wide compatibility make it a favorite among emulation enthusiasts. However, its complexity and less intuitive user interface compared to alternatives like OpenEmu can present a steeper learning curve for new users. While the Mac version is functional, some user reviews suggest that it may not be as polished or bug-free as the Windows version. For users seeking deep customization and broad system support, RetroArch is a robust free option, but those prioritizing ease of use might prefer simpler, more Mac-centric alternatives.
