Switchem might be a useful solution for a few reasons: It allows you to open multiple preselected app windows and files at the same time, and to have those windows appear in the same size and position as you set them up.

one of the best mac apps imo, but unfortunately the dev isn't replying to mails, so seems like the app is not actively maintained after ventura, and im facing accessibility permission problems in sequoia. So hard luck.

I was a happy user after I found the app through this post until MacOS 15 where the app keeps on crashing for me.

Detailed Review

Switchem is a macOS productivity application designed to streamline workflows by allowing users to group applications and documents related to specific tasks. It aims to reduce the time spent switching between numerous open windows by enabling users to pre-define workspaces and switch between them with a simple keyboard shortcut or menu bar access. Users can create groups of applications, web pages, and files, and then open and arrange them in predefined sizes and positions. This can be particularly useful for users who routinely work on multiple projects or tasks requiring different sets of applications.

Standout Features

  • Group Switching: Organize applications, files, and web pages into groups for different tasks or projects.
  • Workspace Customization: Define the size and position of windows within each group, ensuring a consistent layout each time you switch to that workspace.
  • Keyboard Shortcuts: Trigger group switching via customizable keyboard shortcuts for fast access.
  • Menu Bar Access: Switch between groups from the menu bar for users who prefer mouse-based interaction.
  • Automation Potential: While Switchem offers built-in grouping, its functionality can be compared to automation tools like Keyboard Maestro or Alfred workflows, suggesting potential for integration and more complex automated workflows.

Conclusion

Switchem offers a focused approach to workspace management on macOS, particularly beneficial for users who find themselves frequently switching between sets of applications. By grouping related applications and allowing for quick switching, Switchem can enhance productivity and reduce window clutter. While some users might find similar functionality in broader automation tools, Switchem provides a potentially simpler and more direct solution for workspace grouping. However, potential users should be aware that the app may not be under active development and consider trying it through Setapp or other available channels to ensure it meets their needs and is compatible with their macOS version.
