Finder was saying for example, I had like 140 GB of data used but system settings were saying I was using the terabyte or something and I've only got a 512 machine, not sure exactly how it was. I found it with OmniDiskSweeper but nonetheless I found huge files it seemed to have nothing to do with much of anything deleted them and everything is still running very well and currently I'm down to 98 GB of data used of the 490 or so of the 512 is available. So three cheers for OmniDiskSweeper!!!

I find this app very useful in analyzing and managing my disk space according to folder sizes. I use this in conjunction with GrandPerspective, which provides a nice graphical display compared to the itemized list display of OmniDiskSweeper.

Quick and easy download & installation. Found what took up my space in 2 minutes. Deleted them on request in the app. DONE. No more problem.

I recommend OmniDiskSweeper as a good free program for cataloging the drive and looking at specific locations. It can help me find things like large tutorial files I don't need and the like.

I've tried a bunch of these tools over the years, both graphical and text-based, but I still keep coming back to an oldie-but-goodie—and it's free: Omni's OmniDiskSweeper has everything I want in a disk space usage tool. It's got an intuitive interface, and a way to either delete what I find or open the containing folder to take a closer look.
OmniDiskSweeper is a straightforward and free utility for macOS designed to help users reclaim disk space. It quickly scans selected drives and presents a list of all files and folders, sorted by size in descending order. This allows users to easily identify the largest space-consuming items on their drives and decide what to delete. The interface is column-based, similar to Finder's column view, making navigation intuitive for Mac users. While it lacks advanced graphical representations, its simplicity and speed are its key strengths. OmniDiskSweeper directly deletes files, bypassing the Trash, so caution is advised when removing files.
OmniDiskSweeper is an excellent, no-cost solution for Mac users who need to quickly free up disk space. Its speed, simplicity, and clear presentation of file sizes make it a highly effective tool for finding and removing large, unneeded files. While it may not have the visual appeal or advanced features of some paid alternatives, OmniDiskSweeper excels at its core function: efficiently identifying and sweeping away large files cluttering your Mac's storage. It's particularly useful for users comfortable with a text-based, column-oriented interface and who prioritize speed and ease of use over graphical analysis.
